Shruti Khanijow is a Partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. (SAM) and a part of the firm’s dispute resolution practice, operating out of its Chennai office. With extensive experience in foreign-seated and domestic arbitrations, as well as commercial litigation, her practice encompasses a diverse range of industries including oil & gas, construction, mining & metals, infrastructure, energy, and enforcement of arbitration awards. Over the years, Shruti has represented private parties and state entities in high-value international commercial arbitrations, both institutional (ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, and SIAC) and ad hoc, under various governing laws.
Her experience spans arbitrations seated in jurisdictions such as India, the MENA region, London, Paris, Singapore, and Geneva, with a clientele that includes publicly listed companies, multinational conglomerates, and regional corporates. She is the youngest person of Indian origin to be empanelled as Specialist Mediator with the Singapore International Mediation Centre, and is a steering committee member of the Young International Arbitration & Mediation Centre. Shruti is also a member in Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National MSME Council 2025-26.
Shruti completed her undergraduate law degree with distinction at Hidayatullah National Law University in India and holds an LLM from University of Cambridge, where she was a K.C. Mahindra Scholar. Before returning to India, Shruti worked with high tech startups and Venture Capital Funds based in Armenia, Russian and Silicon Valley, US as a Visiting Expert on a full scholarship from University of Cambridge. At Armenia, she represented the University of Cambridge before the President of Armenia
Beyond her core arbitration and litigation practice, Shruti brings significant expertise in advising third-party funders on cross-border, high-stakes arbitrations and insolvency financing. She also plays a pivotal role in board management and advisory services, offering conflict avoidance strategies tailored to startups and established enterprises. Additionally, Shruti advises on optimizing board structures and governance practices to facilitate effective decision-making and foster long-term organizational resilience.
Select Experience Statement
- Representing Indian subsidiary of European dredging and marine infrastructure group in defending challenge to domestic award enforcement under Indian law before the Madras High Court against government undertaking on ports (ongoing); successfully obtained judgment for release of 75% security during pendency of the challenge proceedings.
- Representing an AI tech-contractor company in enforcement proceedings for a foreign arbitral award in Singapore seated Indian law proceedings initiated by private equity fund (ongoing).
- Represented a Mauritian insolvency professional in a landmark mandate in administering assets in India pursuant to a judgment of the Supreme Court of Mauritius, and successfully defeated an anti enforcement suit in Indian Courts. This was one of the largest disputes involving a listed Indian company in which a foreign liquidator/foreign majority shareholder asserted rights, encompassing oppression and mismanagement proceedings and recognition proceedings before the local courts and Tribunals.
- Represented the Minority Shareholders based in Dubai in Oppression and Mismanagement of Company proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal, National Company Law Appellate Tribunal, The High Court of Kerala and The Supreme Court of India. (ongoing)
- Advising an Omani infrastructure company in enforcing an Omani arbitral award against an Indian Company and its subsidiaries in India and the GCC. Representing the client before Indian Courts in enforcement proceedings.
- Advising and representing US investor in a dispute regarding sale of assets in India (ad hoc mediation and arbitration)
- Advising and representing Korean Auto Manufacture Conglomerate in a dispute with its Indian joint venture partner. (ad hoc arbitration, New Delhi seated)
- Represented and advised large construction and infrastructure companies in the Middle East and in India including on (a) international arbitrations on medium to large contractual disputes in construction and oil & gas industry such as LCIA-Kuwaiti law (reference and statement of claim), (b) asset tracing, recovery and enforcement of judgment of Oman courts before UAE courts (ongoing), (c) successfully defending pre-arbitration injunction application before Indian courts in SIAC Singapore seated arbitration (Indian law), and (d) impact and strategy in London seated
- Represented Indian solar power company in Geneva seated ICC arbitration against Italian subsidiary of an American conglomerate in an equipment supply dispute in solar industry (English law).
- Represented Indian subsidiary of one of the largest renewable energy companies in Singapore seated SIAC arbitration against Chinese solar panels/equipment manufacturer (English law).
- Represented minority shareholders (US and Indian) of a major Indian healthcare service provider in a Singapore seated SIAC arbitration against the largest Asian healthcare service provider (majority shareholder) (Indian law). Second-chaired a team of Indian and Singapore counsel on the main claim, and allied proceedings.
- Advised and represented international and Indian clients in relation to various issues including hazardous incident liability, supply chain risks, compliance with various plastic waste management rules, directions on air pollution, etc.
- South Korean conglomerate in relation to issues of contractual liability due to environmental hazard caused by counter-party in India.
- Indian private limited company in Gujarat on environmental liability for hazardous accident and insurance related claims before the National Green Tribunal (“NGT”) and the Supreme Court of India.
- Represented Minority shareholders and nominee directors of an Indian super-specialty hospital in civil suit to enforce right to mandatory injunction and specific performance under the Shareholders’ Agreement and opposed the defendant’s application for reference to arbitration (Section 45, Arbitration and Conciliation Act) before the District Court, High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
- Advised, acted for and represented one of the leading Indian can manufacturer and its Dutch majority shareholders and the Board on issues with minority shareholder on governance, day to day Board and CXO advisory, implementation of articles and shareholders’ agreement, rights’ issue and infusion of further capital, obligations to lenders and other non-compete actions of the minority shareholders, including in proceedings before NCLT and New Delhi seated LCIA arbitration.
